David’s Story

Determined to Succeed

David Finding a job in tough economic times is challenging and can be disheartening. David's search for a job is all of that and more. He was a heavy meth user and battled substance abuse and mental illness for 20 years. He was homeless, living on the streets, fighting for drugs.  About a year ago his dad died.  Adding to his personal grief, his mother became suicidal and David stayed with her until she was better. Now, he rents a room from a friend. Although the situation is working out “pretty well,” he would really like to have his own apartment with his dog Amos. For that he needs a job.

Since his dad died, David has been diligently working his recovery program. His goal is to become an employed Peer Support Specialist. He successfully completed the required training program and supervised internship.

David enthusiastically entered the job market looking forward to landing a job working with persons in recovery. He soon learned the supply of qualified applicants was greater than the demand. But, he is not giving up.

To help David reach his vocational goal, Neda Milesic, Clinical Liaison at CHOICES Townley Clinic arranged for a “Job Coach” to work with him. David says, “Someday something’s got to break.” He is understandably feeling the stress of the situation and he reminds himself to “never give up no matter how many times you fall,” and he adds with pride and a smile, “I haven’t fallen for quite awhile.”

David is successfully managing his recovery while dealing with the stress of a job search. He knows that his continuing perseverance will eventually lead to his dream job.
